York Youth Social

It was a day full of York Youth, 11 hours to be exact!  In the morning was the usual Sabbath School, Church, Potluck.  We had a nice time with our musical quartet though whilst waiting for the food.  Enjoyed flipping through the hymnal calling out favorites, Michael counting us off and then we played, switching octaves and parts with each verse.  After stuffing ourselves to capacity at potluck, we decided what better way to walk it off then to go collecting for ADRA's Annual Fund?  So off we went, the 12 of us, with our little ADRA canisters, asking for spare change.  A few weren't home, but of the ones we talked to only one said no!  The rest scrounged around and came up with a few coins for us, and after chatting with a nice lady about her garden we were soon clinking our way back to the church to regroup.

Jon and I hopped on our bikes to head home before everyone else beat us there, but before you knew it we had a full house!   Thirteen of us crowded into our small little living room as we hashed out our plan for the upcoming Visitor's Day at church we were planning.  We came up with a plan of action, and even rehearsed our special music, It Is Well With My Soul, complete with four part harmony and even a key change on the last verse led by us sopranos!   By the end of rehearsal we were sounding quite good.  We played a Bible game as Sabbath wrapped up and then laid out the Haystack spread in the kitchen and dug in.  MMMmmmm haystacks. Some people were having haystacks for the first time!  Whoever heard the like?!  We felt it our duty to introduce them to the goodness of a traditional Adventist haystack.

It was then on to more games, and we introduced them to another first, Catchphrase.  As usual, this was quite the hit.  It was amusing to see some cultural differences between British and American knowledge though.  One poor British guy asked his teammates: "what do you call the guy who throws the ball in American baseball?"  His teammates shouted back: "the bowler the bowler!"  Baseball guys, not criquet.  It stumped them for quite a while, until the timer ran out and our team got a point in fact :)  Another guy caught stuck on the clue 'leaky boat'.  He got them to say boat, but couldn't get them to say leaky, so he just kept saying, three or four times in a row, "it has a hole in it!".....(people shout a few wrong guesses)..."it has a hole in it!"  By the end we were laughing so hard we couldn't hear him or the timer anymore.  Then you had those few people who would get it and just stare at it in silence, while competitive Claire urged them, "say something!  Push next!  DO something!!!"  Granted, our team had a slightly unfair advantage with Jon and I being on the same team.  One that I got was 'Denver Broncos'.  I calmly turn to Jon and say ' Colorodo football team.'  He responded correctly, everyone else stared in silence.  Needless to say, our team ended up winning 2-1.  It was a good evening at the Campbells :)

Yves getting a little passionate about his description.  Some slight gesturing went on, as you can see, but given that English wasn't his first language we gave him a little leeway :)
