This past Thursday we had Summer Camp! It was actually supposed to be a 4 day event, the first one at your local institute and the last three at the English Village near Seoul. However, none of our students could spend the weekend away, so we just had our local camp for the one day, and it was really fun! We had 6 students come, which sounds like was a pretty good turnout compared to some institutes.
It had been pouring all week. Well, actually it has been pouring off and on for about three weeks. It's nothing like India's monsoon season, but Korea does definitely have a distinct rainy season in the summer. Unfortunately, we were hoping to go to Suncheon Bay for part of our local camp, so we prayed really hard in the preceding days, hoping that we'd have a break in the rain to enjoy a little hike that morning. The clouds looked threatening that morning, but our fearless leader and coordinator Jon made the executive decision to brave and go anyway, with umbrellas in hand. Well, God definitely answered our prayers...we ended up using the umbrellas to keep away the sun, not the rain! Jon and I even managed to get a bit sunburned! We definitely weren't expecting that, or we would have protected ourselves with some sunscreen (don't worry Mom), but it was supposed to be thundering and pouring! Instead, it was sunny off and on, (mostly on) and
very humid and sticky. We got back to the institute that night to teach our debate classes and our students asked us, "Teacher!! What happened to your face?!" We told them we got sunburned at Suncheon Bay and they asked us, "HOW?!" Yeah.... we'll be careful what we pray for next time, haha :)
Anyway, we had a nice hike around the bay; things sure looked different compared to the last time we went! The first time Jon and I went to Suncheon Bay was back in November, our first term here, and the reeds were much taller, but everything was pretty dead and brown. And it was windy and cold. This time was COMPLETELY different! SO green, hot and humid. As we were walking, we spotted tons of tiny little crabs and mud fishies, which apparently you're charged $1,000 dollars for kidnapping. They make tasty dinners according to our students. I told them don't worry, I won't be taking any mud fish for my dinner any time soon; they're safe with me around. After our hike, we had planned to go back to SDA and play some games and order some pizza, but one of our very vocal, opinionated, but very generous students Beatrice insisted that was too low quality and she would take us all out to a nice restaurant instead. Uh....ok. She's really hard to say no to and does NOT take no for an answer. So off the three cars went to the restaurant, Jon and I in hers. And lucky for us we were in her car, because on the way she decided to treat us to Baskin Robbins. :)

After our relaxing and tasty lunch, we took the crew to the brand new bowling alley in town, right next door to the institute! Now let me just say that Jon and I would both (thankfully) agree that bowling is not really our thing; I'm not sure why but it just isn't. The last time we went was about three years ago, before we were even dating with a group of friends. But, we figured it would be a fun activity to do with our students, and it was. We had some really serious bowlers who were quite good (top score goes to student Blade, who got 155 in his last game) and we also had a girl who had never been bowling before. Let's just say my score fell somewhere in between the two. I was happy because while my score wasn't anywhere near amazing, I did manage to get three spares! After bowling, we did go back to SDA and played some games with the students, including a game called Trifecta (kind of a combination of Taboo and Charades) and a traditional Korean game called Yutnori. All in all I'd say we had a pretty awesome and successful local camp, and now we are enjoying a blissful three day weekend while most everyone else is up at camp! Here's to trying to us trying to beat the heat!! Baskin Robbins, less than a block away, is going to be our new best friend this summer... :)
